Shavar Newkirk from NY, who featured in a Bounce magazine article, soon after he appeared on MiddleSchoolElite.com. Kejuan Johnson from Atlanta GA, arguably the best 7th grader in the nation. Jashaun Agosto, the talented and highly publicize 12 year old from Seattle Washington. Zach Radz, the 518 phenom and Alonzo Trier aka Zo from Texas, the #1 player in the country for class of 2015.

Kejuan Johnson the Face of Middle School AAU Basketball

Who's Joel Berry?

Some hype followed the AAU national in Memphis, TN but the top players weren't there to steal the show. Middle School Elite's such as Kejuan Johnson, Perry Dozier, Tyler Dorsey and Jerron Love just to name a few of Clark Francis top 10. On the contrary, Alonzo Trier and Austin Grandstaff handled their business on Team Texas and came in 11th place. Trier is the highest rank player in the country for the class of 2015, according to Hoop Scoop .

So, who are the real challengers?

"Kejuan plays a high school schedule" said Tommy. "You can't compare that to 13U competition" he added. Johnson plays with Joel Berry, the top 8th grader in the country for the class of 2014. Last week, they played at the John Lucas high school international camp for juniors and seniors in Houston TX. Now, they're gearing up to play with Each One Team One 16U team at The Peach Jam in Augusta, GA and The Nike Super Showcase in Orlando, FL. Tommy says "Berry's a goon" because he intimidates opponents.

Kejuan Johnson is the face of AAU basketball in more ways than one. His picture was supposedly displayed at the tournament, making it enticing for players to purchase a frame in their image. "When people saw Kejuan's picture they thought he was at AAU nationals" said Tommy. Stay tuned as we bring you more of Kejuan Johnson and look for Joel Berry to be a main feature on National High School Elite.

Middle School Elite 13 Year Old Referee

Brahima the worlds youngest ref

Brahima is an outgoing 13 year old boy and is simply known as The World's Youngest Referee. Brahima was one of the attractions of the Quai 54 streetball tournament.

He showed some nerve but overall did a great job refereeing the Streetball games for someone of his age and won the respect of players and basketball coaches. Shavar Newkirk The Re-Birth of Rice High School!

The Best Kept Secret

Middle School Elite saved the best for last. Shavar Newkirk is one of the best rising freshmen players in the country. Newkirk was born and raised in Harlem, NY. He's a 5'10 point guard with a Rondo type build and wiry arms. He causes havoc when in the passing lanes, swiping at the ball and blocking shots. Well, Newkirk will be attending Rice, a  powerhouse high school close to where he lives. "I want to win three title championships" said Newkirk. In his humble ambitions, he realizes a difficult task awaits him. He'll definitely be a main feature on NHSE.

"Shavar is a big name in the city", said Maurice Hicks, former head coach at Rice. Now, he's currently in charge of the basketball operations at St. John University. Shavar has gained MVP status, as a legit point guard. He's a student-athlete on top of his game. Newkirk's a winner on the court and in the classroom.

In 2005 and 2006, Newkirk won two AAU division 2 national championships. Shavar's father, Shameek says those experiences gave his son a winning mentality. " I'm focusing on getting him ready for the next level" said Shameek. Newkirk is no stranger to the gym, he actually enjoys exercising. He's either working out with a personal trainer or at practice with Team Scan. He's a team oriented, pass first point guard who rebounds. He shoots the ball well and is capable of attacking the rim with his weak hand. Kemba Walker is a player we can't forget but Shavar Newkirk is a name we'll  remember. The updates of Newkirk's success will be exclusively on National High School Elite. 

NY Gauchos Jr Elite team

Coach Anthony Williams 9U Crew

The Members of Gauchos 9U (Williams) travel from their homes throughout the NY area to develop at the  Historic Gauchos Gym in the South Bronx, NY. From this gym base, they branch out across the Tri-State area to compete against top competition.  The composition of the members of this team truly reflects the rich cultural diversity of the City of New York. This diversity enhances the athletic and social experiences of the team members and their families.

MSE: What are your teams most recent tournaments? 

Coach Williams: Within the last months my team has participated in various AAU tournaments. NY Regionals: DC Assault Classic, MIT, NY Gauchos Pre-Nationals; and Game Over Classic. As well as a host of NYC local tournaments.  This team has collected a total of 5 championships with the most recent additions being; NY 9u Metro Regionals and Game Over Classic.

MSE: How do you get your team and players better?

Coach Williams: We also still have our kids working on individuals skills. Right now we are focusing more on team chemistry; so we can be better collectively.  We will be getting involved with more strength, agility and conditioning workouts. Typically in the off season we practice twice weekly; combined with weekly individual skills workouts.

MSE: What are the future plans for your team? 

Coach Williams: The future plans for this team is quite simple: Continue to challenge my kids as a team; pushing and encouraging them to reach their full potential. Sky’s the limit for this team as we have a great core of kids in our midst and the foundation has been laid.  We will continue to work hard as a team, building on our fundamentals and playing against the better competition.  If you want to be the best you have to beat the best.

MSE: What are your goals for your team?

Coach Williams: Continue to provide these kids with an experience while playing the game of basketball; and developing a team that can compete and win on a National level.

Coach William's been consistent for years and his 9U team is rated the #1 AAU team in the NY Metropolitan area. "In particular, our team shows great educational and athletic promise amongst its members. Through tremendous financial support of many individuals and businesses, the team has been able to travel across the U.S to compete in numerous high profile events; including the upcoming AAU National Championships in Orlando, FL." said Coach Williams.

"Theres a ton of recruiting websites, you know this quite well. Most just publicize players and really don't have any hands on regarding the development on that player. What if Middle School Elite did showcase camps where the most important aspect is improving that player (guard camp, shooting camp)"- Paul Hoover. We think it's a great idea!  

Paul Hoover is considered one of the premiere shooting coaches in the United States. Coach Hoover, founder and director of Pro Shot Shooting System, has guided hundreds of collegiate and professional players in the art of shooting. Coach Hoover has also authored, “Pro Shooting Secrets” which is the largest and most in-depth shooting book to date. Considered a revolutionary book on shooting, it has been read by hundreds of collegiate and professional players and coaches.

Paul has also produced the successful DVD, “The Focused Shooter.”During the past three years, Coach Hoover and Pro Shot have traveled across the United States teaching shooting fundamentals. He has hosted “Pro Shooting Secrets” basketball camps and clinics throughout the United States and Canada (44 States and counting). Known as “Basketball’s Traveling Road Show,” Coach Hoover and Pro Shot have hosted hundreds of shooting camps and clinics during this time.

Paul has successfully head coached teams at all levels. He guided various high schools teams for 16 years in Southern California. During this span, he directed his teams to 300 wins and 12 league championships. Known for their excellent shooting ability, Coach Hoover’s teams set scoring records at four different schools.

Coach Hoover has also head coached many years in the NBA Fila Summer Pro League in Long Beach, CA (three seasons) and the “Say No” Collegiate Summer League (nine seasons) in Los Angeles. During this span, Paul’s “Say No” team produced six future NBA first round draft choices and dozens of players that would later play professionally.

After spending his entire coaching career in Southern California, Paul and Pro Shot have recently relocated to Columbus, Ohio to be closer to the Midwest, South and East Coast. Coach Hoover is a 1989 graduate of California State University Long Beach (BA English).

"My shooting camps are the best.  Every camp I put on I have a handful of players who have been to well know camps/clinics hosted by shooting coaches and trainers.  I ask them...at the end of each camp tell me what camp is better...I have NEVER had one camper say the other camp is better", Hoover told me.

Derrick D-Flight Brown Trains Lance Stevenson!

Welcome To The "Terror Dome"

The Terror Dome is a popular basketball playground located in Coney Island Brooklyn. Derrick D-Flight Brown has trained some of the top players from New York. He trained Telfair and Quincy Douby (Raptors) from a child. Derrick and Stephon Marbury are like brothers, they grew up and worked out together. He also coaches the Warriors, a tough group of 8th graders from the inner city.  Derrick is king of the Terror Dome. "In 1997, Derrick was a 2 guard senior at Providence college. He was a great 2-way player, and undeniably the heart and soul of the team."
 
"Lance Stevenson called me Wednesday night for a work out." said Derrick, he was nervous about the NBA draft the next day. " We were at the Terror Dome from 12 to2 in the morning. He is Born Ready" said Derrick. In the thickness of things, Lance resorted to the courts for peace of mind. Later that day, I'm sure Stevenson was relieved, when the Indiana Pacers picked him. Derrick Brown is a serious trainer on top of his game! 

Ajon Efferson & Alex Robinson Co MVP at Adidas 150 Camp

Ajon Efferson got co- MVP at phenom 150 with Alex Robinson from Texas Select. We wrote about Efferson earlier and mentioned that he'd be at the Adidas Phenom 150 this June. Who knew Efferson would be one of the top rising freshmen at the camp. We heard Robinson is a top notch athlete who dunked on two players in the lane. People said, the lefty has skills and was too much for the competition. 

Efferson, a point guard from California was his usual self. He attacked the basket and made the right plays. The word is Efferson made defenders pay with a trey when they backed off him. We heard Efferson and Robinson were on the same All-Star team, they alternated playing time. Efferson saw the floor well and got the ball to open teammates. The combined talents of 
Efferson and Robinson helped them to win the game. Stay tuned as we update you with more reports on players at the Adidas Phenom 150 Camp.

Alonzo Trier AKA " Zo"

The Trier Phenomenon

Alonzo Trier is the top 7th grade player in the country, according to Hoop Scoop. If Trier improves his defense he'll be an almost complete player. Trier has nice size and he grew a few inches. The extra weight on his frame should help him absorb body contact. Trier was virtually unknown until the New York Times Sports Magazine unveiled his life. The Alonzo Trier story is the biggest breakthrough for youth basketball in recent history. In 2009, I sat down with Michael Soko, the writer and told him about the Trier Phenomenon. After our discussion, Soko immediately reached out to the Trier family for an interview.

In 2008, I met the Trier's at the Jr All American camp in Virginia. Alonzo had beat out a previous big name opponent from Baltimore in a scrimmage game. Trier was excited and I was happy for him. Each morning, my friend Steve drove Trier and three other players from the hotel to the camp. "Alonzo tell my friend back home how you caught wreck". Trier didn't hesitate to grab the phone and say exactly what happened.

Alonzo's mother Marcy, has a strong faith in God, he always watches over them. She helps Trier stay balanced with books and basketball.  I spoke with him not too long ago, his voice has got deeper. "If Zo isn't working out then he's studying school work", said Marcy. Trier's a good person and a talented player. Zo never met his dad, so he's the man of the house. I was actually looking out for Trier, when I mentioned his name to Michael Soko. I call it fatherly love because he's like a son. Triers's on top of his game and academics too. The question is whether Trier's attending the Adidas Jr Phenom Camp in California this August. Sources tell me he'll be at the star studded showcase.   

Chazz Clark Middle School Jr Elite

4th Grade NYC CHOZ 

As things quickly heat up, we bring you the upcoming 4th & 5th grade players from NY 2 LA. Remember, top player doesn't necessarily mean high in the rankings. It signifies a player on top of his game. Interestingly enough this level is extremely competitive. I applaud the parents, coaches and guardians for their sacrifices. In return the boys play their hearts out, knowing school is priority. Let's push them to the extent success is inevitable.

In 2006, early basketball exposure for kids was considered taboo. Today its "not a bad thing" to do, regardless of age. We've come a long way, keep up the good fight. The youngsters deserve recognition for aspiring to be relevant. Look out for the next Middle School Jr Elite write up.

Coach Wee from Gauchos snatched up Clark to be his point guard. I watched Clark at a tournament and he has "A Game." He dribbles with his head up and makes decent decisions in transition. On fast breaks he had some good looks, but made a few turnovers in the passing lane. In half court Clark fed his big man, as if he's used to playing with tall players. Clark impressed us the most with his defense, he seem to always end up with the ball after a trap.    

Zach Radz The 518 Area Code

The One & Only Zach Radz

We couldn't wait any longer to write about Zach Radz because he's a very controversial player. Scouts tend to look the other way when it comes to him. Maybe they aren't used to seeing a white boy this young having the eye of the tiger. He is a pure shooter from the 518 area code. Expect Radz to be physical, as he surrounds himself around athletic players. Coach Bourne of Juice All Stars told me Zach is "tough" which indicates he is an aggressive player. As the temperature rises, his every action is a desperate attempt for completion. Zach has a nice jimmy on the outer elbows. Once his shot is dropping, he wants the ball back. Don't let the blue eyes deceive you determination has no color. If he were any better than he is now, it would be pretty ugly. Our report on Zach Radz is exclusive for the fact we're first to cover him.

Did you know Derrick is a gym rat too? If Derrick isn't practicing with Radz, he's at  his youngest son baseball games and his daughter dance classes. There's never a conflict of schedule, he manages to fit it all in. Derrick has the responsibility of helping them become elite student athletes.

"I want my son at the most competitive camps and tournaments" said Derrick, when we spoke last week. It's no surprise that Zach will be at the National Adidas camp in California this August. Adidas is the only sneaker company camp for middle school players. "The camp fees, air fare and hotels get expensive in todays economy" but Radz still finds a way to go places. Radz has been to various camps like Hoop Group and Five Star. He uses these platforms for Radz to meet new friends and enjoy the ultimate basketball experience. Derrick believes their journey is essential for taking Radz to the next level. Radz progressive play can speak for itself. If he continues on the circuit, it's no doubt that he'll be a D1 prospect.

Marguise Walker Chi-Town Prodigy

Marquise Walker is from the Windy City and he's only ten years old. This kid has over forty videos on You-Tube. I would say Walker is one of the top rising 5th grade players in the country. In the midst of all the confusion things must come to an order. Actually, we feel it's never too early to rank serious talent! Chikosi is Marquise's father, he prefers to be called "Kosi". He admits to spicing Marquise game up with moves from various players including "Jerron Love the You Tube Sensation". Marquise has never been to a camp, but his dad is anxious for him to attend one. "We love the challenge because you never know whats on the other side" says Kosi as he touches on his life growing up. 

Kosi played hoops like the rest of his friends to escape the mean streets of Chicago. Kosi worked out hard and taught himself how to play basketball. He knew what it would take to be the best. Before Marquise was born Kosi was training to teach him. Marquise Walker is a Jr Elite player on top of his game.           

Happy Fathers Day

Elijah Davis father, Charles, text me today to wish me a happy fathers day. Elijah is a freshman on the Varsity basketball team at St. Patrick High School in New Jersey. His father wanted us to share this message with everyone at MiddleSchoolElite.com.

"Happy Fathers Day to all that have kids even if you are not on your job take this day as a sign to get in your child's life before its too late and for those single ladies doing the work of two this is your day as well and to the ones who passed on R.I.P you left your mark on the world and big shout out to the step dads that step up as men respect to you now I want to say thank you God for my kids I love them with all my heart I'm proud to be a father. Isaiah Briscoe was MVP at Rumble in the Bronx and Playaz Blow Up Tournament 14U

Isaiah Briscoe is a top player from New Jersey, he brings home MVP's. His pops, George called to tell me how well his son is doing. I've seen Briscoe rock on several occasions and he has incredible swagger. He can pass, shoot and handle the pill. Look out for Briscoe in one of our top five player write ups.

Jashaun Agosto Adidas Phenom Bound

 

               Agosto's first camp experience

I've known Julio for several years, we speak often as possible. Julio's the father to Jashaun Agosto (6th grade), one of the most exposed youth players in the world. Julio's from Lafeyette Brooklyn New York and lives with his family in Seattle, Washington. Julio's mom and dad played college ball. His sister also played fours years at Witchita State. At age 14, Julio moved to Alaska and played high school ball. After surgery on his left knee, he never returned to the game. Julio pursued music as a producer for artist such as Kurupt and 2-PAC. Nowadays, he keeps his eyes on the prize. His youngest of five boys, Jashaun.

Agosto's appeared on ABC World News, Good Morning America, Ellen DeGeneres and featured in the New York Times. "His dedication to the game and the hard work he puts in is unrivaled", declares Julio. He works out with Agosto 2 to 4 hours a day at the federal way community center. Check Jashauns highlight videos on You-Tube, he has millions of views. 

"Did you see Shannon Brown dunk on the Celtics in game six", Julio asked me. He just saw post-game highlights on television. "His head was over the rim", he said laughing out loud. Julio nor Agosto got to see the Lakers win because it was business as usual for them in the lab. Julio talks about how Agosto broke his right hand. He was pushed in mid-air and landed on it the wrong way. When Agosto's cast came off, his hand was still weak. So, he use his left hand to pull out a game qualifier for the AAU nationals. Last but not least, Julio informed me that Jashaun is attending the Adidas Jr Phenom Camp in California San Diego this August and expects to have a blast!

Kejuan Johnson ATL's Finest

Can you believe Kejuan was dunking in 4th grade?

Kejuan Johnson (7th grade) is from Atlanta, Georgia and he's only 13 years old. I decided to begin with Johnson because I last spoke with his dad, Tommy last night. Tommy's birthday is June 14, a day after mine. Tommy's a very influential parent in youth basketball and he's the coach for J-Smoove All Stars AAU team in Georgia. Kejuan's a lot like his father, he exudes enormous confidence. Kejuan wants to be the biggest, the strongest and the baddest. He's constantly looking for the next challenge from his peers and even his father. They're both competitors. When I first saw Kejuan I said to myself this kid's a beast. Tommy describes Kejuans body as "gorgeous". "Kejuan has the height and size of Carmello Anthony", says Tommy. "But with JR Smith skills", he added. Last year, Kejaun was 6'3" and 205 lbs. Now, he's 6'6" and 225 lbs. Tommy's goal is for Kejuan's talent level to catch up with his physical attributes.

Despite Kejuan being one of the top players in the country, Tommy has a way of keeping him humble. Is Kejuan the best? Tommy replies with, "he isn't better than me, so how could he be the best." In other words, Kejuan you have a long way to go.

Johnson practices several days a week, for hours during his workout sessions. In their father like son relationship, Kejuan is full of determination similar to Tommy. Whenever Kejuan had downtime, between games at camp, he'd put up a couple of jumpers. If his shot failed to connect, he didn't seem affected by his misses. He continued to perfect his craft, knowing one day he'd be a tough and smart player as Tommy. While people observed Kejuan, I could read his mind. Johnson was thinking, as long as people "watch me" shoot around, they'd never have a chance to catch up. Hit or miss, Kejuan's on top of his game and definitely a natural born winner.

Who's ALex Kline?

Kline's a talented young sports writer and reporter as well. He's on top of his game and has a tight camp in his corner. 

In Kline's 'Coast to Coast Season Updates & Recruiting Rundown' of High School  players he interviewed: Kyrie Irvin (NJ), Nigel Williams- Goss (NV), Gorgui Dieng (WV), Dwayne Polle (CA), Miles Davis (NJ), Kaeem Jack (NY), Perry Ellis (KS) and Josh Selby (MD) just to name a few. (Read Article). Kline's a huge fan of youth basketball and the high school bridge to college exposure. His experience, credibiltiy and energy is amazing.

Middle School Elite!

Many people are now contacting us to find out, how can they get on MiddleSchoolElite.com. It is to our understanding that all the right people are checking this site. If you're on the circuit best believe we'll see you, if we haven't already. Top player doesn't necessarily mean high on the rankings. Rather, players on top of their game. If you're a middle school elite student athlete opportunities will come your way. Keep pushing for whatever you believe in your heart and it'll manifest soon. We encourage you to take serious new-found interest in your child's development athletically, but more important academically. Congratulations, you are a middle school elite player of the year.

Nicholas Thomas will be at the Adidas Phenom 150 Camp

Yes, Nicholas Thomas will be at the Adidas Phenom 150 camp this June. I saw Thomas do his thing last year at the Dallas Texas Phenom camp. He beat defenders to the rack and finished with either hand in traffic. He used his smarts and athleticism to separate himself from the rest. His impressive play earned him the top 8th grade spot at the regional camp. 

Nicholas father, Will coaches him on his 14U Panther Select team. And, Nicholas plays 16U with the Arlington Astros. He has the right people around him to provide proper guidance and accelerate his developing game. This August, Nicholas also plans to attend the KO Basketball camp in Philly. 

Mr. Thomas plans for Nicholas to sharpen his fundamentals at the drill stations and then compete against the best-of-the-best in the nation. This past May, I saw Thomas at the John Lucas Middle School camp in Houston, Texas and he got busy again. Thomas was in 2 guard mode the entire weekend and demonstrated why he's a top player. Look for Nicholas at the camps mentioned and many more upcoming events.

I recently spoke with Jordan's dad and had the chance to see CJ in action. Taylor uses proper technique when shooting, but he could work on a much quicker release. Jordan has a focused game, he makes good decisions in transition and half-court. He's a pass first player who looks to square up to the basket for a jump shot.

2014 Jordan "CJ" Taylor, a 6'0" 160- Combo guard plays hard on both ends of the court.  He can pop the midrange jumper, and uses his handles to get to the rim with either hand.-Coleman

Taylor, an 8th grader is currently playing up a level with Texas D-1 Ambassadors 15U. I've always observed CJ to be an introspective basketball player who is open to coaching and learning to do things the RIGHT way, not necessarily the flashy way. He's all business on the court.-Coach Max

David Rogahn and Dave Keefer from CaliforniaPrep.com recognize Ajon Efferson as a top (class of 2014) player in the region. Efferson who's 6 ft. resides in Altadena, California where the population was 42,610 at the 2000 census. It's about 14 miles from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center. In 2009, I saw Efferson play at the Adidas Phenom Jr. National Camp in San Diego, California. Efferson was rank top point guard at the camp. Ajons father, Dante Clark is very supportive of his son and actively involved in grassroots youth basketball. We might see Efferson at the Adidas Phenom 150 this June 2010.

At the 2010 Fullcourt Press Spring Showcase, held May 16th at Lawndale high school Ajon was ranked 2nd behind Marsalis Johnson. Also, Efferson was selected to play in the freshmen division and came out top player as a 8th grader.

"Big guys Marsalis Johnson and Bryan Alberts battled each other almost evenly while there were also some super guard work displayed by Ajon Efferson, Tide Osifeso, and Elijan Woods, who asserted himself in the second half. Ajon Jefferson may be one of the top 8th graders in the SoCal region and he saved his best for the freshmen game, barely beating Darien Williams (Katella) to land on top of the ratings. Deon Evans (Lawndale), Devon Pflueger (JSerra), Nick Colletta (La Verne Lutheran), and Jay Miller (La Verne Lutheran) also had strong showings".

Each Year the competition to win basketball scholarships at every level becomes more intense. Every legitimate means of gaining an edge toward securing an education and the opportunity to play at the college level is an investment in your future. Only a handful of players win D-I scholarships each year. It is a difficult jump from high school to college in any sport. Basketball is the most limited in terms of scholarships available.

Colleges now recruit not only nationally, but internationally, so the pool of athletes searching for scholarships continues to grow. Using NCAA figures from their own "participation rate", study and "probability of competing beyond high school", the NCAA estimates that 2.9% of HS seniors will compete at some level in college.If our student/athletes get the message sooner rather than later about the numbers, they can positively affect what they have some control over. The keys are academics, skills training and nutrition. Winning a college scholarship is not just about ability. The quality of effort expended can and will improve your odds of success.

NY Westchester Hawks @ All Ohio Super 16 Tournament

   Yhanni Bartley and Isaiah Whitehead earn All-Tournament Awards


Westchester Hawks 14U headed to Columbus, Ohio to play against some of the best Junior High school teams and players in the region. Rob Taylor of Buckeye Prep Report was at the USA Sports Academy to cover age groups 15U & 17U. Unfortunately, the Hawks 15's fell short in the semi-finals and the 17's as Rob wrote "were without the services of their dynamic back court of... 

However, the Hawks 14U made a 4-0 run only to lose in the championship, to a team they'd beat by 12 points during pool play. The Hawks had the player's which they needed in Jerron Love, Isaiah Whitehead and Yhanni Bartley.   

Saturday, Hawks battled All-Ohio Red, Ohio Varsity & All-Ohio Black. They went 3-0. Sunday, Hawks defeated Lebron James Shooting Stars to play the championship game against All-Ohio Red. 

Jerron Love (7th grade) played like the world was on his shoulders and with heart the size of the continent of Africa. Jerron ran the show and controlled the tempo each game. Love made no-look passes to assist his teammates with easy points. He penetrated the gaps and created plays in the lane. Love showed advanced ball handling skills and was too hard to guard. Jerron Love and Isaiah  Whitehead 6'4 (8th grade) combined for an amazing backcourt and a 1-2 punch for the talented Hawks team. Whitehead scored every possible way, he even made a baseline shot from behind the backboard. He attacked the defense with vengeance and got his shot off using either hand in the paint. Isaiah's consistent from the 3 point line and has a good pull-up jumper. This weekend Whitehead was the best middle school player in the building . Yhanni Bartley (8th grade) a lefty forward caused damage in the red, he abused opponents on both offense and defense. Bartley worked the glass well, he got boards and put backs. Yhanni made strong drives to the rim and finished with defenders draped on him. When fouled on the way up, he made free throws to help give his team the advantage down the stretch. The starting five included Sonny Lorenzo (8th grade), who stepped it up on this level. On defense he slides his feet and doesn't reach for the rock. Lorenzo also has a good offensive skill-set.

In the final quarter of the championship game score was tied with 2.8 seconds remaining on clock. All-Ohio Red had possession and the Hawks players locked down their man, hoping to bring the game into over time. In a strike of luck, Justice Cornley (8th grade) of All-Ohio Red received the inbound pass and shot a Hail Mary 3 pointer to win the game.

John Lucas International Middle School Combine Nike Basketball Camp Houston Texas

John Lucas, played in the NBA for 14 years. In 1976, John was first pick to the Houston Rockets. Thereafter, he coached 3 NBA teams. John's son, John Jr. also played in the NBA for 4 years. The 3rd annual John Lucas (international middle school combine) Nike Camp in Houston Texas was a blast and had to be the best in the Midwest for 2010. Some of the top athletes traveled near and far from states such as DC, GA, OK, LA, OH, NC, KY, TN, WI, MD, NY, TX & IN. A player even came from the Bahamas! Kelly Oubre (TX) 6'2 the guard picks his spots well and has a nice stroke of the ball. Joe Burton (TX) 6'3 has a power game. He's able to put the rock on the floor which makes him "scary good". Burton also has a 28.8 vertical. Tyler Ulis (OH) 5'5 point guard has good ability to run a team, he wasted no time beating his man with quick crossovers. Also, Tyler used his shoulders to prevent defenders from cutting his lane. Jalen Lindsey (TN) 6'1  runs the floor and is fluid in his movement. He makes it look easy. Lindsey runs the floor well and is improving his back to the basket game. Alonzo Trier (TX) 5'10, has good offensive skills and scores the ball very well. He grew a few inches and toned up. Trier played 2 guard and went to work whenever he got the rock. He goes to the basket with either hand and uses a combination of dribbles before releasing a wet jump shot. One of the top performers was Kejuan Johnson (GA), he's just too big. This ATL 6'5 kid is 13 years old and a human dunking machine. It's virtually impossible to stop him on this level. He's a 7th grader who's used to playing several grades up. Kejuan thrives off playing aggressive especially on his way to the rim. Nicholas Thomas (TX) 5'11 is a 2 guard who can shoot the open shot and used his wide frame to get easy points in the paint. He won MVP at the Dallas Texas Phenom camp. Thomas plays tight defense and he can lock down his man. Christian Sanders (TX) 6'2 was a high flying athlete who occasionally slam dunked in traffic. I call it self- distinction or player- separation. How many 8th graders do you know dunk in traffic? Sanders is a pure scorer that doesn't mind playing team basketball. James Blackmon (IN) 5'10 isn't just good, he's a great decision maker. James played calm under pressure and displayed consistent 3 point shooting ability. Blackmond oozes with confidence, you can see it in his demeanor. Dakari Johnson (KY) 6'8 and 240 lbs was a beast in the paint and feels comfortable playing in his big shoes. Dakari is a major prospect with the NYC Gauchos program. Johnson got the job done, when he dribbled through defenders and made difficult finishes. Austin Grandstaff 6'3 (TX) made efforts to prove he has the goods. Austin made tough shots in the paint and made defenders pay for sleeping on him. Against all odds there was no turning back for Grandstaff. Jerron, Austin, Mavin and Christian on the same team was too much. Davis Jackson (KY) 6'7 is an energetic big man, he upset defenders battling to get loose balls, put backs and rebounds. Davis made several vertical dunks with defenders standing right in front of him. When Jackson gets his defender up in the air, he'll usually finish with an up-and- under hand lay up. Mavin Saunders (Bahamas) 6'5 intimidated defenders with his deisal physique. He posed a threat for opponents hoping to deter him with their court presence. Mavin's muscle mass allowed him to create mismatches. Saunders constantly exercised his strength by sacraficing himself to get buckets. The clash between Saunders and KeJuan was verocious. Imagine a close cage fight; the real test of heart. Jonathan Carson (WI) 6'3 has soft hands around the basket and a nice feel for the game. 'Jon Jon' plays light on his feet for a big man, he moves with finesse. Carson's very familiar with the camp life. James Cunningham (KY) 5'10  ran the show for his squad with shovel passes. James was able to protect the ball from defenders in the final seconds of 4th quarter to win the game. Trey Dilworth (TX) 6'4  has a good body and is a shooting guard on the rise. He made several dunks. Dilworth has a mid-range game as well as perimeter shot. Jerron Love 7th grade (NY) 5'6 was very impressive on both ends of the floor. Clark Francis (Hoop scoop) once wrote in 2008 "We have high praise for Jerron Love because his defense was one of the best at Jr. All-American Camp". Well, at John Lucas's camp Jerron was considered the best ball handler! The talented floor general called pick-n-roll plays to get his teammates involve and used screens to go on shooting sprees. He drained a long 3 pointer that made the gym erupt. Justice Winslow (TX) 6'4 is a talented player with a great upside. He's good around the glass and gets rebounds. Winslow has nice size and is very athletic. Justice plays unselfish and displayed good court vision.
